Part VI: The Other Half

This is a triathlon, but it is not an IRONMAN (The difference being?) A triathlon is three events: swimming, biking & running. An IRONMAN is 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking, 26.2 miles of running. This triathlon has those three events, but a 1/3 of the calories. (Distances) Sorry, a third of those distances. (So, you will finish before midnight?) I hope so. I would like to take my wife sightseeing. She is the one who will be waiting for me to finish the race. As the perpetual third wheel growing up with only sisters, I am sensitive to include others in what I'm into. (How does one include their spouse in a race that only you can compete in?) By letting her into your world. My wife knows my workouts. She knows my bike & run split times. (Why would you do a split during a race?) She knows how fast I swim, I bike & I run. So, she knows how well I am doing by how ahead or behind I am from my projected pace. She is captain, c...

Part V: Running

If I don’t get eaten by sharks in the swim or crash on the bike, I will just have to run 8 miles. (In San Francisco?) Yes (A city notorious for its' hill?) Yes. (But you hate hills) Yes (I don't understand) My friend Peter Shankman says live outside your comfort zone b/c nothing grows there. Running hills is a challenge & I thrive on challenging myself. (The hills of San Francisco are notorious for their steep inclines.) This is why on Sunday mornings, I can be seen running up and down Cedar Lane in Teaneck. (Once again, why hills?) Whether the race is flat or hilly, running hills is helpful. Running hills engages your vastus medialis oblique (VMO). (Aren’t the MVO’s an MTV Music award????) You are thinking of the VMAs. The VMO are the secondary muscles of your QUAD, your thigh muscles. (How long have you been training like this?) In January, I started running 10 miles once a week outside. (Not in the house on own private hamster wheel?) I know ...

Part IV: Escape From Alcatraz- Biking the Hills

I have made so much of out swimming the sharks (Yes, we know) that I did not want to neglect telling you about the bike. (Land shark...just asking) This is a triathlon, but it is not an IRONMAN (The difference being?) Three events: swimming, biking & running, but a 1/3 of the distance of the 140.6 race. (So you will finish before midnight?) I hope so. I would like to take my wife sight seeing.  San Francisco is famous for three things (Just three?) Shuddup. Alcatraz, cable cars, Rice-A-Roni, the Golden Gate Bridge, Metallica & Tony Bennett's Heart. (Metallica & Tony Bennett's Heart?) Just Tony Bennett's Heart.Google it. The hills of San Fransisco are notorious for their steep inclines. Notice Alcatraz Island at the top of this picture! (Don't you hate hills?) I hate hills. (So naturally you chose a race in the hilliest city in America) Naturally. This type of race requires a different approach than an...
