Race Day-Escape From Alcatraz

Image
I never sleep well the night before a race. I'm too excited to sleep, yet for some reason, I slept well this time. Maybe it was that my body was on NJ time that weekend. Maybe it was the peace of mind that comes with experience, which is surprising because something always goes wrong. It's just a matter of what & when. Triathlons are tricky.  You are swimming in open water, not a pool, so current is an issue. You are biking & running outside so hills are an issue. There are time cut offs you have to make, so the danger of being too late is an issue. Escape from Alcatraz came with an additional concern: I needed to be on a 6:15 a.m. ferry to the swim start. 5:15 a.m. I was in taxi with my best friend, Peter & my wife Janet. 5:35 a.m. I started to set up transition. That entailed laying out my shoes & clothes for my "transition" from the swim to the bike ride. 5:45 a.m. I stared my morning prayers. It only takes me five minutes to say my mo...

Part VI: The Other Half

This is a triathlon, but it is not an IRONMAN (The difference being?) A triathlon is three events: swimming, biking & running. An IRONMAN is 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking, 26.2 miles of running. This triathlon has those three events, but a 1/3 of the calories. (Distances) Sorry, a third of those distances. (So, you will finish before midnight?) I hope so. I would like to take my wife sightseeing. She is the one who will be waiting for me to finish the race. As the perpetual third wheel growing up with only sisters, I am sensitive to include others in what I'm into. (How does one include their spouse in a race that only you can compete in?) By letting her into your world. My wife knows my workouts. She knows my bike & run split times. (Why would you do a split during a race?) She knows how fast I swim, I bike & I run. So, she knows how well I am doing by how ahead or behind I am from my projected pace. She is captain, c...

Part V: Running

If I don’t get eaten by sharks in the swim or crash on the bike, I will just have to run 8 miles. (In San Francisco?) Yes (A city notorious for its' hill?) Yes. (But you hate hills) Yes (I don't understand) My friend Peter Shankman says live outside your comfort zone b/c nothing grows there. Running hills is a challenge & I thrive on challenging myself. (The hills of San Francisco are notorious for their steep inclines.) This is why on Sunday mornings, I can be seen running up and down Cedar Lane in Teaneck. (Once again, why hills?) Whether the race is flat or hilly, running hills is helpful. Running hills engages your vastus medialis oblique (VMO). (Aren’t the MVO’s an MTV Music award????) You are thinking of the VMAs. The VMO are the secondary muscles of your QUAD, your thigh muscles. (How long have you been training like this?) In January, I started running 10 miles once a week outside. (Not in the house on own private hamster wheel?) I know ...

Part IV: Escape From Alcatraz- Biking the Hills

I have made so much of out swimming the sharks (Yes, we know) that I did not want to neglect telling you about the bike. (Land shark...just asking) This is a triathlon, but it is not an IRONMAN (The difference being?) Three events: swimming, biking & running, but a 1/3 of the distance of the 140.6 race. (So you will finish before midnight?) I hope so. I would like to take my wife sight seeing.  San Francisco is famous for three things (Just three?) Shuddup. Alcatraz, cable cars, Rice-A-Roni, the Golden Gate Bridge, Metallica & Tony Bennett's Heart. (Metallica & Tony Bennett's Heart?) Just Tony Bennett's Heart.Google it. The hills of San Fransisco are notorious for their steep inclines. Notice Alcatraz Island at the top of this picture! (Don't you hate hills?) I hate hills. (So naturally you chose a race in the hilliest city in America) Naturally. This type of race requires a different approach than an...

Part III: Avoiding Becoming Shark Food

There are three ways to know where you are going when you swim in the open water: 1. You can follow the bubbles. Swim "on the heals" of someone who is going at your pace. Their propulsion will create bubbles. The only danger of this approach is if you are following the triathlon equivilent of the twon drunk. The  swimmer who can't swim straight if he was following a tow cable below the water's surface. (You have seen this supposed "town drunk"?) Yeah, Ironman Lake Placid, 2017. We were like three blind mice. The blind leading the blind. 2. The Tarzan Swim aka the lifeguard approach stroke (Tarzan Swim?) Johnny Weismuller AKA Tarzan of the Apes (Who?) Olympic gold medalist...googlge him. If you need to see where you are going, this is the best way to get a clear shot of what is ahead of you. (So why not swim this way?) a. You try swimming with your head out of the water. You won't get far, trust me. b. This position c...

Escape From Alcatraz (Part II)

Image
I kick started my training for the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon with a new years day Polar Bear Plunge. (Because it was the start of a new year or because the Escape from Alcatraz swim is freezing cold?) Yes...& yes. (Didn't you do that last year?) Yes, I swim laps for almost 4 minutes. (How did you do this year?) Not as well. With a water temperature of 37 degrees and an air temperature close to that, my swim was about 30 seconds long. (How did it feel?) How did what feel? Everything went numb immediately, but I had a support team waiting for me as soon as I deliver the water. (How did you really start training for this new event?) I was unhappy with my swimming last year at Ironman Lake Placid. I knew something was wrong with the way I've swimming. So I enlisted my mentor Neil Cook to help me figure out what was wrong with my swim. Neil came out to New Jersey with his GoPro & filmed me for ten minutes. (Just ten minutes?) Ten minutes was all it took ...

Escape From Alcatraz (Part 1)

After 5 Ironman races in 7 years, I decided I needed a new challenge. (Sky diving?) Done that. (Ice climbing?) Did that too. (Swimming with sharks?) Funny you should mention that. Soon after I made this decision, I got a lottery spot in one of the most prestigious triathlons in the world. ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ (So it's not an Ironman?) No, but it does have a swim, a bike & a run. (How far is the swim?) 1.5 mile swim (No biggie, that's shorter than an Ironman swim.) In 50 degree water. (So you will be warm in a wet suit.) Did I mention the sharks? (Ok, in a wet suit you will look like a seal. Been nice knowing you.) I am reminded of the expression, you don't have to swim faster than the shark...you just have to swim faster than the guy next to you. (You mentioned a bike?) 18 miles through the hills of San Francisco. (How do you train for that?) 9W here in New Jersey has plenty of hills. (Do you ride outside in winter?) No, but I wil...
